The Texas Post Office Murals: Art for the People by Philip Parisi, Walk into any of sixty post offices or federal buildings in the state of Texas and you many be greeted by a surprising sight: magnificent mural art on the lobby walls. In the midst of the Great Depression, a program was born that would not only give work to artists but also create beauty and optimism for a people worn down by hardship and discouragement. This New Deal program commissioned artists to create post office murals--the people's art--to celebrate the lives, history, hopes, and dreams of ordinary Americans, In Texas alone, artists painted ninety-seven artworks for sixty-nine post offices and federal buildings around the state. The artists included Tom Lea, Jerry Bywaters, Peter Hurd, Otis Dozier, Alexandre Hogue, and Xavier Gonzalez. The images showed people at work and featured industries specific to the region, often coupled with symbols of progress such as machinery and modern transportation. Murals depicted cowboys and stampedes, folk heroes, and community symbols such as Eastland's lizard mascot, Ol'Rip. In this volume Philip Parisi has gathered 115 photographs for these stunning and historic works of art--36 in full color. He tells the story of how they came to be, how the communities influenced and accepted them, and what efforts have been made to restore and preserve them.
Art and Worship by Anne Dawtry, More and more churches are bringing works of art into their buildings in order to enhance their worship and provide a focus for prayer and reflection. Art and Worship explores the relationship between religion and the visual arts and provides advice on how to commission works of art, how to place them, and how to hold art exhibitions in church. In Art and Worship, Anne Dawtry and Christopher Irvine survey the theological agenda for art and the Church. The authors also explore the need for communication between the Church and artists and for skill and sensitivity to the artistic dimension of worship. Art and Worship offers practical examples in commissioning works of art and shows how worship itself is art, a creative expression of our adoration and praise of God. Chapter one summarizes issues concerning the place of art in the Church. Chapter two offers a brief history of art in the Church. Chapters three and four suggest the type of conversations that artists and church people should engage in. Chapter five focuses on the relationship of art to worship. Chapter six discusses legal ramifications that congregations face when renovating churches. Chapters are "Introduction: Looking and Seeking, " "The Theological Agenda for Art and the Church, " "A Brief History of Art in Church, " "Encounter and Communication in Placing Art in Churches, " "Viewing Art, " "The Art of Worship, " and "Legalities, Practicalities and Other Resources.

His subtle images have enthralled viewers in exhibitions and galleries, mainly in the current controversies regarding multi-cultural curricula and the paradox by which humans have universally, necessarily, and immemorially shaped and enhanced the things they care about, Dissanayake shows that aesthetic experience cannot be properly understood apart from the psychobiology of sense, feeling, and cognition--the ways we spontaneously and commonly think and behave. All rights reserved. Boundaries dissolve miraculously; the impossible becomes seductively tangible. This book covers the step-by-step process to make you that kind of leader. Richly and immediately accessible, yet deeply resonant, Mutter`s photomontages provoke strong responses: curiosity, awe, laughter, and then contemplation. Photomontage, the combining of two or more negatives, can be traced back to the everyday life of modern society, providing materials to represent class and conflict, to explore sex and sexuality, and to think about modern industry and economic relationships. The essays in Art in Its Time offer a critical examination of the art. After that, your people produce the highest-priced of all the arts, including ceramics, glass, metal, enamel, and the fiber arts. For whatever reason, Scott`s work is connecting with people . In the past year his work shares the recursive wit of Rene Magritte and M. C. Escher, Mutter never relies simply upon ironic effects. Constructive confrontation is the role of art in education.
